210 rejected: decimal point in an amount field (N2 implied decimal)

Money fields in a 210 are type N2: digits only, with the last two digits as cents. Sending 1250.00 where X12 expects 125000 gets the invoice rejected, or worse, paid at the wrong amount.

What you see

AK2*210*0001~
AK3*B3*2**8~
AK4*7*193*6*1250.00~
AK5*R*5~

Reading it: segment B3 (2nd segment from ST), element 7 (B3-07, element 193 Net Amount Due), error code 6 (Invalid character in data element), bad value 1250.00. The same thing can show up on L1 element 4 or L3 element 5 (element 58, Charge).

What it means

In X12, N2 means numeric with 2 implied decimal places. The decimal point is never sent: 125000 = $1,250.00, and 5000 = $50.00. R (decimal) fields, such as L1-02 Freight Rate and L3-01 Weight, are different: they can include a decimal point.

FieldElementType$1,250.00 is sent as
B3-07 Net Amount Due193N2125000
L1-04 Charge (line)58N2125000
L3-05 Charge (invoice total)58N2125000
L1-02 Freight Rate60R1250 or 1250.00

Why it happens

The exact fix

  1. For every N2 amount: multiply dollars by 100, round to a whole number, and send digits only (no decimal point, no commas, no $).
  2. Make B3-07 equal L3-05, and make L3-05 equal the sum of the L1-04 charges, unless your partner's guide says otherwise.
  3. Resend as a corrected invoice following your partner's rules. Some partners want the same invoice number with a correction indicator in B3-08; others want a new number. Their 210 guide decides.
